Description

Here's an album that's easy to find on CD, and heartily recommended to anyone who likes sophisticated, classical-influenced instrumental music.

Anssi Tikanmäki (1955-) is well known as regular arranger and producer for Juice Leskinen, and for his film scoring assignments which include several movies by the Kaurismäki brothers. He specializes in writing music for silent movies performed by his own Anssi Tikanmäki Filmorchestra.

Tikanmäki studied in the Sibelius Academy in 1974-1980 and graduated as a music teacher. As a freelance musician he's worked with a lot of prominent pop and rock bands and singers. He's also written music for the theater.

Tikanmäki's first solo album "Maisemakuvia Suomesta" (Finnish Landscapes) paints eight musical portraits of Finland, and the accompanying booklet gives thorough descriptions of each composition and what images and events they describe. My personal favourites are near the end: "Savolainen metsä" (The Forest of Savo) is carried by a splendid accordion part that's very jolly and slightly complex - just like the mindset of the people who live in that part of Finland. You rarely get a straight answer if you ask those people a question...

"Kiutaköngäs" is a rapids that's part of Oulankajoki, a river running from Salla to the Russian lake Pääjärvi (Озеро Пяозерo, Ozero Pjaozero). This is a majestic and ode-like tune that constantly shifts moods, being at times peaceful and pretty, wistful, wild and dramatic.

Even rock'n'roll fans should have this gem in their collection!

Added to this post is Tikanmäki's rendition of Jean Sibelius' hymn "Finlandia" - made for Aki and Mika Kaurismäki's movie "Arvottomat" (1982). Sibelius' son-in-law, Jussi Jalas disapproved strongly of this pop/rock-style arrangement and wanted to ban it from the radio. It was to no avail - this version received a lot of airplay, and Sibelius' younger descendants also gave their nod of approval to Tikanmäki's attempt to introduce the music of this composer to younger generations.
