Description The turbulent period from the Boer War to the introduction of the Aliens Act was marked by contradictory imaginings of "the Jew"--pauper/capitalist, separatist/impostor, ideal colonizer/undesirable immigrant, familiar/alien. Going beyond the racial or cultural dimensions of fin de siècle semitic discourse, this new collection considers the wider colonial context in which ambivalent attitudes to Jews were produced, in particular the nexus of Britain, East Africa and Palestine. NADIA VALMAN is a Lecturer in the School of English and Drama, Queen Mary University of London, UK. She has co-edited three books on the representation of Jews in British and European culture and is the author of The Jewess in Nineteenth-Century British Literary Culture.
