Here is early David Lynch (Wild at Heart; Twin Peaks; Mulholland Drive) giving us a taste of his somewhat upsetting surrealism. This film appears to defy a thorough interpretation, but many facets are very intriguing. Set in a very industrial area, there is a suggestion of grime, constant irritating noise, and general deterioration. What will you make of the mutant infant and reactions to it? What\'s up with his girlfriend? What about that lady in the radiator? If you think you have problems, check out John Nance, as Eraserhead.
Is is horror? science fiction? mystery? fantasy? tragedy? comedy??? Is David Lynch the film equivalent of Howard Stern\'s \"shock jock\" persona, or is he a misunderstood artiste? Whatever you decide, it is at least surreal. Even if you find yourself unable to weave the complex symbolism into a cohesive plot, the movie remains an experience. If you\'ve never seen a surrealistic film, or if you just love\'em, then this is the movie for you. Of course, if you\'ve seen them and don\'t like them, you probably won\'t like this classic example of the genre.
