LP (78 rpm), vermutlich aufgenommen Ende der 1940er bzw. in den ganz frühen 1950er Jahren" [String Quartet in E flat. LP (78 rpm), presumably recorded in the late 1940's or in the very early 1950's]. Both the Bartók recording as well as the Hindemith sound very much like they were made at more or less the same time. To this listener's ear, however, the very good and unusually resonant sound of these two recordings suggests a date falling somewhere firmly within 1950's "hi-fi" - rather than a 78 rpm recording of the late 1940's (but then, I suppose anything might be possible). What is absolutely certain is this: the Keller Quartett München, founded by Erich Keller in the aftermath of World War II, was a first-class ensemble - as the masterly offerings here prove beyond a doubt; recognized as such during the time the quartet was active; and deserves to be far better remembered than it apparently is presently (... but perhaps this is partly due to the fact that the Keller Quartett München specialized in promoting "modern music" ... and partly because our time seems to specialize in amnesia). __________________________________ LP transfers and digital material.
