The Sopranos was een Amerikaanse dramaserie over de Italiaans-Amerikaanse maffia in New Jersey. Hoofdrollen worden vertolkt door onder anderen James Gandolfini, Edie Falco en Lorraine Bracco.

In deze serie draait het om het dagelijks leven van maffiabaas Tony Soprano. Niet alleen het gewelddadige maffiamilieu, ook familie- en liefdesperikelen spelen een grote rol in de serie.

Die combinatie en de spitsvondige dialogen maakt de Sopranos tot een serie die zich vrijwel nauwelijks laat vergelijken met enig andere televisieserie of film. De serie is in de Verenigde Staten vele malen bekroond geweest.

Synopsis
Anthony "Tony" Soprano (Gandolfini) staat aan het hoofd van de DiMeo familie, een criminele organisatie met thuisbasis in Newark, New Jersey. Officieel is Tony werkzaam in het afvalbeheer bij afvalbedrijf Barone Sanitation, maar dit is slechts een dekmantel. Tony's echte business bestaat onder andere uit illegale gokpraktijken, afpersing, overvallen en witwaspraktijken.

Synopsis
The series begins with Tony Soprano collapsing after suffering a panic attack. This prompts him to begin therapy with Dr. Jennifer Melfi. Gradually, the storyline reveals details of Tony's upbringing, with his father's influence looming large on his development as a gangster, but more so that Tony's mother, Livia, was vengeful and possibly personality-disordered. His complicated relationship with his wife Carmela is also explored, as well as her feelings regarding her husband's cosa nostra ties. Meadow and Anthony Jr., Tony's children gain increasing knowledge of their father's mob dealings. Later, federal indictments are brought as a result of someone in his organization talking to the FBI and his own Uncle plots Tony's death.
