Changes in version 5.40 Beta 1:
Sub-menu "names Encoding" in the "Settings" menu allows you to select the encoding for file names in the archive. The choice affects the contents of the archive to view and retrieve commands. For quick access to this menu, the keyboard shortcut Ctrl + E can be used.
This feature can be useful when unpacking an archive without file names in Unicode. Example: unpacking zip-archive with file names in the Chinese language in the Windows environment, where language for programs that do not support Unicode, select Russian.
If the folder with conventional RAR volumes are also present recovery volumes (.rev files), then archive the test team after the test .rar files will check the contents of the rev-files.
If you want to test only the files .rev, without checking the volume .rar, select .rev files in WinRAR file list and apply the test team only to them, or run the command line the following command: rar t arcname.part1.rev
NTFS file system allows you to give the file names with spaces and dots at the end, but a lot of Windows-based programs can not correctly handle such names. If the "Allow potentially incompatible names" on the "Advanced" tab in the "Extraction path and options" is off, WinRAR when removing removes gaps and points at the end of file names if they're available.
By default, this option is turned off.
The console version of RAR the extraction also removes spaces and points at the end of file names, if only on the command line switch is specified -oni.
Previously, when choosing a method of updating the "Synchronize archive contents" (or -as specified key in the command line) is interrupted, if it was not possible to read some of the archived folders. Now WinRAR continues to perform the operation and saves the files in the archive in accordance with unreadable folder.

c) packed with an unknown size for files in a continuous block 7z referred to as '?' instead of '0' when viewing the contents of the archive in WinRAR.
Maximum comment length for RAR archives has been increased from 64 to 256 KB in size.
Since the file comments are stored SFX script command, this increase allows you to include a self-extracting archives longer the main text and license information.
The standard font size in the browser window WinRAR correctly increases, if Windows is selected screen mode with a high DPI.
Now the minimum supported version of Windows - that's Windows XP SP3. WinRAR will not work in Windows XP without any service packs installed.
Removed option "Settings / File list / Do not change the register of letters in names." This option is intended to facilitate the transition from the MS-DOS on Windows, and is no longer required.
Bugs fixed:
a) "Add to archive and send it by e-mail" in the 64-bit version of WinRAR 5.31 does not work with Microsoft Outlook x64;
b) if WinRAR 5.31 for one of the languages of the direction from right to left has been installed in Windows with English or other system language, where the letter direction - not from right to left, then WinRAR could change the layout of Windows Explorer to the appropriate letter from right to left;
c) if the file is in a folder the ban record and archive the contents were extracted to a folder by dragging and dropping, can be written, then WinRAR gave an unnecessary request for privilege escalation.
