Dopo una rischiosa esercitazione a Gibilterra l'agente James Bond viene inviato a Bratislava, per coprire la fuga del generale russo Georgi Koskov . Qui intuisce che Kara Milovy, una violoncellista, è stata utilizzata per tentare di assassinare il disertore, e la risparmia. Trasferito in Inghilterra Koskov attraverso un gasdotto, 007 porta in salvo Kara utilizzanto come bob l'astuccio del suo violoncello. Di qui parte ben presto in volo per Tangeri, alla ricerca del generale Leonid Pushkin, che il disertore ha accusato come ideatore del piano 'Smiert Spionem', morte alle spie.
