The collection starts and ends with Vera Lynn with We'll Meet Again and The White Cliffs Of Dover (what else?) and everywhere you look there's a familiar song and a few surprises. No wartime compilation would be complete without The Andrews Sisters or Gracie Fields and yes, they are here too. There are some magical names in this collection: Geraldo, Joe Loss, Al Bowlly, who conjure up images of old black and white newsreels. There's a bit of fun with Robb Wilton's The Home Guard, Flanagan and Allen, George Formby and Tommy Trinder with Der Fuhrer's Face - a song made famous by Spike Jones. The Big Bands such as those of Leslie `Hutch' Hutchinson and Ivy Benson's All Girl Band feature, and Joe Loss and His Orchestra perform great versions of some of the Glenn Miller hits. When Britain was up against it, these songs kept the people going and wherever the British and Allied troops were stationed help to remind them of home and keep their spirits up, the music of this era is worth preserving and that is exactly what this cd collection has achieved.
