AS McKUSICK RECALLS IT: "George Russell was a great influence on all the guys in the workshop. His writing led us in a variety of new directions-harmonically. His pieces/lines were not easy to play. We sightread them. Then we had to woodshed the things. They didn't lie comfortably on the instruments. We had to spend time refining and sharpening our approach to each work. Barry and I even took time out to study with George for a while in order to more fully understand what he was doing. George's stuff was an adventure. You honed your skills as a musician playing this material. It moved us ahead-technically and aesthetically." (from text)
