This is the 1970 reissue of the 1968 LP on the Uni label, ripped from vinyl to 16/44.1 FLAC in April 2016.

This record is full of catchy California-style pop, brimming with storytelling lyrics and Neil Diamond's unmistakable voice. It represents a transitional time for Diamond, as he was beginning to move away from his teen pop sound and into more mature, introspective songwriting—notwithstanding the painfully square, sarcastic "Pot-Smoker's Song".

"Shilo" was not present on the original 1968 LP. A version of the song was first released in 1967 on the album Just for You. After the smash success of "Sweet Caroline" on the Uni label, interest in his back catalog was high, so a new mix of "Shilo" was released as a single by his old label and became a hit in 1970. Diamond then created a new recording of the song and put it on this reissue of his first album for Uni, Velvet Gloves and Spit.
