Runaround Sue - 2:43 INFORMATION OBTAINED FROM THE INTERNET: Anyone who embraced the new CD technology when it appeared on the scene in the early 1980s will recall these 1989 releases from Continental Communications Corporation and distributed through Columbia House which, unlike most such CDs at the time, gave you 20 or 21 selections culled mainly from the Laurie Records 22-volume vinyl LP series which began in 1969 and went on through the 1970s. In terms of CD conversions, not all were produced in this format but there seems to have been at least 14 or 15. Another similar small series was 21 Country Rock & Love Songs Of The 50's & 60's. These all contained a mix of songs familiar enough to attract a buyer's attention with several that had brows wrinkled trying to figure out who the heck THEY were. The sound quality, which was "enhanced" from original tapes, is quite decent, but there are no liner notes, discography or chart details - which was in keeping with most CD releases at the time. All the sides are, however, original renditions. So what I have done here is re-list the contents to fill you in on those missing details where I'm able: 1. I Remember - The 5 Discs - Rust 5027 - did not chart 1960; 2. Gloria - The Passions - Audicon 106 - did not chart 1960; 3. He's So Fine - The Chiffons - # 1 Billboard Pop Hot 100 and R&B for 4 weeks each March-May 1963 - Laurie 3152; 4. Denise - Randy & The Rainbows - # 10 Hot 100/# 18 R&B Sept-Oct 1963 - Rust 5059; 5. Ring-A-Ling - Carlo - Laurie 3227 - did not chart 1964 (Carlo Mastrangelo); 6. Teen Angel - Dion & The Belmonts - non-charting B-side to their first hit, the May-June 1958 # 22 Top 100 I Wonder Why - Laurie 3013; 7. The Wanderer - Dion - # 2 Hot 100 Dec 1961-Jan 1962 - Laurie 3115; 8. Rock And Roll Revival - The 5 Discs - Laurie 3601 - did not chart 1972; 9. Teardrops Follow Me - The Del Satins - Laurie 3132 - did not chart 1962; 10. A Little Bit Of Soap - The Jarmels - # 7 R&B/# 12 Hot 100 Sept-Oct 1961 - Laurie 3098; 11. I Can't Believe - Dino & The Diplomats - Laurie 3103 - did not chart 1961; 12. My Heart Cries - Billy Vera & The Contrasts - Rust 5051 - did not chart 1962; 13. Cry And Be On Your Way - The Demilles - Laurie 3247 - did not chart 1964; 14. Don't Take The Stars - The Mystics - # 98 Hot 100 Oct 1959 - Laurie 3038; 15. Dream, Dream, Dream - The Chiffons - Laurie 3648 - did not chart 1976; 16. No One Knows - Dion & The Belmonts - # 19 Top 100 Sept-Oct 1958 - Laurie 3015; 17. My Dream - Dino & The Diplomats - Laurie 3103 - did not chart 1961; 18. The Spirit Of Woodstock - Ernie Maresca - Laurie 3519 - did not chart 1969; 19. Time Is Wastin' - Carlo - actually, Car l Mastrangelo did this as the lead for Endless Pulse - Laurie 3448 - and it did not chart in 1968; 20. Runaround Sue - Dion - # 1 Hot 100/# 4 R&B Oct-Nov 1961 - Laurie 3110. Not a lot of actual hits here and what there is can be found in any number of later - and better - compilations with proper discographies and liner notes. But there are some fine Doo-Wop sides and Girl-Group entries that might make this a viable purchase even today for some devoted collectors. Still, it would have carried so much more weight as an historical release had they included proper information - for example, when were tracks 8 and 15 actually recorded because their first releases didn't come until the 1970s as indicated.
