Description
21st Century Health & Wellness - Allergies
An in-depth look at allergies, which affect one in every five Americans in some form. The goal of the 21ST CENTURY HEALTH AND WELLNESS is to provide general information in the ever-changing areas of physiology, psychology, and related medical issues. The titles in this series are not intended to take the place of the professional advice of a physician or other health-care professional. Hardcover, Chelsea House Publications 2000 English Illustrated. ISBN: 079105523X ISBN-13: 9780791055236 21st Century Health & Wellness - Holistic Medicine Defines holistic medicine and discusses its treatment of the patient, its use in practice, and its future in health care. Gordon uncritically presents a one-sided view of a controversial trend in medicine. In an easy style, he describes some of the techniques of holistic medicine, the practitioners, and the role of the patient. In his zeal to convert readers, he neglects to tell them when scientific studies have shown that previous practices do not work, e.g., homeopathy was first proven ineffective by Oliver Wendell Holmes in 1842. Gordon does not provide conclusive evidence that these practices work; he may cite a study, but not the contradicting work. He mentions Linus Pauling's studies of large doses of Vitamin C to slow the growth of cancer but does not tell readers about all of the studies that have refuted these studies. Black-and-white photographs, drawings, and diagrams illustrate the text. There aren't any other books on this subject for teenage readers, but this biased and incomplete book does not fill the gap. This series entry will prove invaluable to students writing reports and term papers. Little provides some historical information on STDs, with mention of famous individuals who suffered from these illnesses. She covers both the curable diseases, such as syphilis and gonorrhea, as well as AIDS. Symptoms, diagnosis, treatments, and prevention are discussed as are the social factors and consequences related to sexual behavior in the spread of STDs. Black-and-white photos, line drawings, and reproductions illustrate the text. Maps, graphs, and charts clearly support the author's assertion that STDs have reached epidemic proportions. Students will find a lot of nonjudgmental information packed into this accessible volume. The book includes a seven-page glossary, a list of U.S. and Canadian groups to contact for more information, and a good index. There has long been a need for a solid, single volume work on human anatomy and physiology to update Isaac Asimov's The Human Body (Houghton, 1963; o.p.). This may do it. As with others in the series, it begins by offering a historical perspective, this time as a brief outline of the various scientists and discoveries that have led to our current understanding of the functions of the body. From there, the workings of the body are divided by systems; each is examined and explained, with a detailed, step-by-step description of how each process works. Finally, a short chapter titled "The Body of the Future" touches on some of the current developments in medical practice and technology. This is not a book to be read through, but rather to be dipped into for research. The writing is clinical, precise, and sometimes complicated, requiring careful, multiple readings for full understanding. The book is strictly a presentation of facts; there are no anecdotes or case studies to vary the tone. Terminology is italicized and defined within the text. A limited glossary and a full index are appended. Black-and-white photos and diagrams provide adequate illustrations. In it, they will learn what ancient peoples believed about air and breathing and how modern knowledge on these topics was acquired. They will discover how and why all living things breathe, as well as the many different parts of the human respiratory system and how they work. The volume discusses what can go wrong with the respiratory system and what can be done to prevent and treat breathing problems. It explains how to recognize and cope with breathing emergencies and how to get more information about the respiratory system from agencies and associations devoted to protecting and defending the “breath of life.” Print Length: 108 pages Publisher: Chelsea House Publications (October 31, 1999) Sold by: Amazon Digital Services, Inc.
