Power pop: nothing can touch it for its combination of tune, beat, and jangle. Either you dote on it, or you hardly hear it at all. We won't try and define it here, Pete Townshend supposedly invented the phrase to describe the Who's music. It's gone in and out of style, but the New Pornographers play power pop and are about the hottest band around: so I guess that makes the genre current again.



This collection represents the acts most closely associated with the brand—Big Star, Sloan, the Raspberries, the Buzzcocks, Squeeze, etc.—but tries to include plenty of obscure tracks by less recognized artists—less recognized for making power pop anyway.
