The Fairy Queen, a major English baroque work alternates sung, spoken and danced numbers and was composed by Purcell in 1692 after Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream. The stage is peopled by gods and goddesses, nymphs, goblins, fairies and shepherds, who all take part in a sumptuous ceremony presided over by the god Hymen himself. The acclaimed conductor William Christie conducts this masterpiece on the 350th anniversary of Purcell's birth.
