Synopsis / Plot / Review


From the director of “Linda Linda Linda” comes Nobuhiro Yamashita's seventh film, “A Gentle Breeze in the Village”. The film is based on Fusako Kuramochi's manga “Tennen Kokekko” and screenplay written by Aya Watanabe. This would also be the first Nobuhiro Yamashita directed film where he did not use his own screenplay. Giovanna Fulvi from the Toronto Internatonal Film Festival wrote “the film offers a genuine rendering of a girl's universe. Yamashita takes time to carefully shape the characters, endowing his tale of daily life with blissful moments of great clarity and insight. A departure from the director's previous off-kilter portraits of singular characters, A Gentle Breeze in the Village nevertheless boasts Yamashita's lightness of touch and sharpness of vision as he gives form to a fantastic yet realistic world.”

Meanwhile the film is currently slated to play from October 5th - 9th at the Pusan International Film Festive and picked as an official selection for the festival's “A Window on Asian Cinema” section.

Plot Synopsis from PIFF : “Eighth-grader Soyo lives in a very small rural village of Japan where the primary and middle school share a building for all of 6 students. They spend a happy childhood together playing around the village. Osawa, a boy from Tokyo, transfers to this school. Soyo and Osawa exchange their first kiss through a small incident and naturally become a couple. Adults have their problems but for children, the festival in summer, hair styles, and the ghost tale about a woman who died on the beach are far more important. There is no glamour but the time of purity passes never to be forgotten. After his previous film The Matsugane Potshot Affair, Nobuhiro Yamashita comes back with a peaceful and warm film.”
