Afternoon Play - The Confessions
Set in the art world, Charlotte Greig's thriller is a story of the seductive appeal of money, glamour, crime and the wrong man. Luke's scam will make a killing, but he can't pull it off without Catrin's help. From The Radio Times There's an echo of Ian McEwan's The Comfort of Strangers about this drama. A young man and woman hitch up with an older couple in a foreign city and become drawn into their sadomasochistic world. Charlotte Greig's play focuses on truth and deception, both in the wealthy art circles of Geneva and the personal lives of the four main protagonists. Clive Standen plays a young man so selfish and manipulative that it's hard to understand how he manages to have such a powerful effect upon otherwise intelligent women. But once the confessions of the play's title unfold, his power and status wane with every lie that tumbles from his lips. It's worth listening to more than once as this play has subtle layers worth further investigation.
