"We're counting down the hits the way they're ranked on Billboard's national charts."

American Top 40 with Casey Kasem aired on radio from July 4, 1970 until August 6, 1988. This recording is a rebroadcast from internet radio.

The first song in this countdown (at number 40) is "Absolutely Right" by the 5 Man Electrical Band. I've included a video of them performing my new theme song in "RocketMan_Extras_Package_1" (New format, get the torrent).

"Long Ago And Far Away" (at number 32) is by James Taylor. Casey says Taylor's pet pig Mona recently won a blue ribbon at the 110th Martha's Vinyard Agricultural Society Livestock Show. She also won a purple ribbon, and Casey explains how you can get one of those for your pig too.

"Questions 67 And 68" by Chicago is at number 35, and as a Special, Casey plays "96 Tears" by ? And The Mysterians.

"Everybody's Everything" (at number 28) is by Santana. Casey says Santana was so secretive at the time, they never went to press conferences even if their own manager arranged them.

"What was the first song ever to be listed Number 1 on the Billboard chart?" July 30th, 1940, and the vocalist was Frank Sinatra, but he was singing for some other act. Casey tells who.

The "Theme From 'Shaft'" by Isaac Hayes debuted so high last week it overshot the entire countdown and landed at negative 8. This week it is at a positive number 5. Casey says Mr. Hayes (in concert), "looks like a combination of the Aladdin's Lamp Genie and Yul Brenner in The King And I." I have included 1973 video of "Isaac Hayes" performing "Shaft" live in 1973 in "RocketMan_Extras_Package_1" (YouTube uploader oscarbm2000).

Also, it looked like Mr. Hayes was trying to bring some Funk so I also included (in "RocketMan_Extras_Package_1" download the torrent) some George Clinton & Parliament Funkadelic (Houston 1978, YouTube uploader 898106), where Dr. Funkenstein and Starchild collaborate to make Sir Nose dance with the Bop Gun while performing their smash hit, "Flash Light."

The first artist to occupy #1 on British and American singles chart AND have the #1 album on the British and American LP charts ALL AT THE SAME TIME since the Beatles is at Number 1 with "Maggie May" (don't look down, you'll get dizzy).
