"You're listening to this week's forty top tunes in the fifty states as the countdown rolls on."

American Top 40 with Casey Kasem aired on radio from July 4, 1970 until August 6, 1988. This recording is a rebroadcast from internet radio.

The first Extra in this countdown (hosted by Casey) is part of the original broadcast.

The highest debuting newcomer, at #31 this week, is also the #1 song on the Soul Chart, "Shining Star" by Earth, Wind & Fire

"To The Door Of The Sun" by Al Martino is at #37. Casey says Martino got his biggest break when he persuaded the great Mario Lanza to forego the recording of "Here In My Heart."

Casey gets a letter from a listener who noticed that all 7 albums by the group Chicago were on the chart recently, and wants to know if that's a record. Casey says there are 6 other acts ahead of Chicago, and 5 of them are tied for second place.

Chaka Kahn is at #17 with Rufus singing "Once You Get Started" and BJ Thomas is at #16 with "(Hey Won't You Play) Another Somebody Done Somebody Wrong Song." Casey tells listeners where the name Chaka came from and what BJ stands for.

Ringo Starr leads all of his former Beatle band-mates with his 7th Top 10 hit, the "No No Song" (at #9).

This week's new #1 is "My Eyes Adored You," making Frankie Valli the third male solo-singer in the last 6 months to return to the chart after a long absence and go all the way to the top with his comeback hit. Casey tells about the other two.
