"From Hollywood this is Casey Kasem on American Top 40 and we're counting down the forty hottest records in the nation this week on our way to the most popular song in America."

American Top 40 with Casey Kasem aired on radio from July 4, 1970 until August 6, 1988. This recording is a rebroadcast from internet radio.

In this countdown:

The seventh single from the Saturday Night Fever Soundtrack to hit the top 40 is "More Than A Woman" by Tavares at number 39.

The band Sweet debuts their song, "Love Is Like Oxygen" at number 38 and Billy Joel debuts his hit "Movin' Out" at number 37.

This is the 25th week in the top 40 (34th consecutive week in the top 100) for "I Go Crazy" by Paul Davis (at number 35). Casey calls it the slowest rising top 10 hit of the rock era.

A listener wants to know if there has ever been a successful group (like the Beatles), where all or most of its members make the top 40 again on their own after breaking up. Casey tells about the only other quartet to do just that thing.

Elvis was the first solo singer ever to hit number one with his first two singles. The only other person to achieve that distinction has his second number one song in this countdown.

Another listener wants to know if there has ever been a number one song whose title bears the name of a real person. Casey lists nine such songs.

Seeing that the Beatles were popular in England before they were in America, Casey answers the question, "Did anyone ever cover any of the Beatles earlier English hits and make the American charts before the Beatles?" Casey says yes, and plays a piece of that song.
