American Top 40 1981 January 31st (Size: 293.34 MB)
Description"Every week we count down the most popular songs in the USA from Norway, Iowa, to Brazil, Indiana; from Scotland, Missouri, to Denmark, Maine. Up five notches to number 14, here's Dan Fogleberg with 'Same Old Lang Syne'." Originally broadcast on January 31st, 1981, this program is brought to you by RocketMan's College of Musical Knowledge in conjunction with the CoPilot of the Airwaves (and his faithful dog Shukatoom). This is American Top 40 with Casey Kasem. In this countdown, everything you know is through the looking-glass. Casey reports Kenney Rogers (at #35 with "Lady") grew his beard to look younger. He also says Susan Anton (at #29 singing "Killin’ Time" with Fred Knoblock) is 5'12" tall, and Blondie has the new #1 song in the land with the line "I'm gonna be your number one." Casey gives a Special Report on one of the most successful yet controversial record company presidents in the business: a man who signed Janis Joplin, Chicago, Pink Floyd, Boz Scaggs, Billy Joel, and Bruce Springsteen, and then was fired and asked to leave the premisis immediately. A listener asks, "Which woman hit the Top 40 the most times during the decade of the 70's?" The runners up are Diana Ross, Aretha Franklin, and Olivia Newton-John, but the winner was part of a brother-sister duo and sang lead on all 19 of their Top 40 hits including 3 number ones. Three songs make a leap of 10 chart positions this week: "Crying" by Don McLean (at number 27), "Woman" by John Lennon (at number 17), and "9 To 5" by Dolly Parton (at number 8). Another listener wants to know what recording act has hit the Top 40 for the most consecutive years. The contenders are Patti Page, Perry Como, Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley, and Paul McCartney. Casey calls the winner. There is a singer in the countdown whose first six solo releases all hit the Top 10, and Casey say the song he has in this countdown will end that streak.
