"Every week we count down the most popular songs in the land from Fire Island, New York, to Firecrest, Washington; from Firesteel, South Dakota, to Firestone, Colorado. At #19, Randy Meisner with 'Hearts On Fire'."

American Top 40 with Casey Kasem aired on radio from July 4, 1970 until August 6, 1988. This recording is a rebroadcast from internet radio.

In this countdown a listener wants to know what song in all of chart history has spent the most weeks in a row at #1. Casey says that song as written in a prison cell by a man serving time for attempted murder. Casey plays a sample of the song that spent 13 consecutive weeks at #1 in 1950.

This week's highest debuting song is "Take It On The Run" (at #32) by the group REO Speedwagon.

Elvis Presley's hit "Guitar Man" (at #28) is a remake of a Jerry reed hot from 1967 so Casey plays a sample of the original.

Stevie Wonder (who is at #26 singing "I Ain’t Gonna Stand For It) once solved a crime just by saying a few words into a microphone. Casey tells the story.

"A Little In Love" (at#20) by Cliff Richard is his 73rd chart hit in his homeland of England.

Casey plays a montage of some of the lowest notes in some high-hitting songs in honor of the low bass line in "Celebration" by Kool & The Gang (at 17#).

In all of music history, no act has ever sold shares in itself on a stock exchange until now. Casey says the group ABBA (at #12 with "The Winner Takes It All" is now listed on the Swedish Stock Exchange.

At #1 this week is the longest leaping to the #1 spot since the Star Wars theme by Meco moved from #8 to #1 back in 1977. This week "Rapture" by Blondie moves from #5 to #1.
