American Top 40 1982 March 13th (Size: 277.82 MB)
Description"The numbers get smaller and the hits get bigger as we count 'em down to the most popular song in America." American Top 40 with Casey Kasem aired on radio from July 4, 1970 until August 6, 1988. This recording is a rebroadcast from internet radio. In this countdown there is a song that gave its artist the new Rock Era record among women for hitting the Top 40 the most years in a row. This is her 10th consecutive calendar year. A listener wants to know what #1 song took the most weeks climbing the chart to that #1 spot. Casey says two songs are tied for the record, each taking a slow, 21-week trip to #1. One was by Robert John and the other by Nick Guilder. "My Guy" by Sister Sledge (at #32) is a remake of a song that Mary Wells took to #1 in 1964. Casey plays a sample of Wells’ version of this Smokey Robinson composition. "Call Me" is the song title that owns the record for hitting the Top 40 as the title of the greatest number of different songs. Casey plays a piece of all five "Call Me's" that have hit the Top 40 right before playing the sixth, "Call me" (at #26) by Skyy. "Harden My Heart" (at #25) was a regional hit for Quarterflash (also at #40 with "Find Another Fool") before they came onto the national scene. But it’s not the same recording Casey has been playing for the past eighteen weeks on AT40. This week Casey plays that original "Harden My Heart" that was a hit in the northwest and got them their contract with Geffen Records. Casey opens the American Top 40 Book of Records to tell about the very first recording ever to sell a million copies. It was recorded 71 years earlier when there were hardly a million record players in the world. Who has had forty four Top 40 songs, and has her 27th Top 10 hit in this countdown? Diana Ross (at #8 with "Mirror, Mirror"). The highest debut this week is "Pretty Woman" by Van Halen (at #30). Once upon a time at the bottom of the 14th inning in a baseball game between the Minnesota Twins and the Toronto Blue Jays (with the score still tied 5 to 5), the senior umpire stepped onto the diamond, raised his hands and said, "Game called on account of rock," whereupon a platoon of rock group roadies rolled onto the field and the players went home. Casey tells all about it right before "Shake It Up" (at #4) by The Cars. (The baseball players went home! Get it?)
