American Top 40 1982 October 16th (Size: 688.08 MB)
Description"Every week we count down the most popular songs in the USA from New Athens, Illinois, to New Berlin, Texas; from New Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, to New London, Minnesota; and, at number 27 in our countdown, here's Rush with, "New World Man'." American Top 40 with Casey Kasem aired on radio from July 4, 1970 until August 6, 1988. This recording is a rebroadcast from internet radio. This countdown provides yet another piece of the October 1982 puzzle. Two years ago, I recorded October 30th, and then October 23rd last year. There were 5 shows in October of '82 and every year we get another. Within two years you might begin to see me share these AT40 shows in month-long blocks instead of individual broadcasts. Wouldn't that be nice? In this week's episode, Premier plays a song by Linda Ronstadt as the first Extra (Segment 4). They announce it as "Get Closer" but I think they might have been hitting the sauce because I've included Ronstadt's video for "Get Closer" and that's not it! "Hurt So Good" by John Cougar spent 16 weeks in the Top Ten, four weeks at number 2, but never made number one! After 22 weeks in the Top 40, it is this week's biggest dropper, falling 14 notches from 15 to 39. A listener wants to know if any hits have ever named real people in their titles. Casey says it has happened dozens of times, and lists the twelve that made it all the way to number one. Another listener wants to know who was the first professional athlete to hit the Pop Chart? Casey says after considering the sports of baseball, football, basketball, hockey, boxing, golf, tennis, and bowling, the answer is no one. No athlete’s foot has ever stepped into the Top 40. Casey does play a bit of "I Love Mickey" by Teresa Brewer (singing with Mickey Mantle in a song that made number 87), but the only way M&M ever had a real hit was with a bat. Luther Vandross once told a magazine writer he'd wrestle Bruno Sammartino (Wrestling Champion of the World) to fulfill his dream of producing Aretha Franklin in the studio. "Jump To It" (at number 24) by Aretha Franklin is that dream come true, and I've included a video of Bruno Sammartino (who never did have to wrestle Vandross). The only member of royalty ever to hit the chart did it singing a duet with Bing Crosby. Grace Kelly would later become Princess Grace, Casey plays a bit of her duet, "True Love," and I've included the clip from the accompanying motion picture "High Society" (YouTube up-loader John1948TwoA1).
