"I'm Casey Kasem. We're hearing some of the world's biggest hits by some of the world's biggest stars."

American Top 40 with Casey Kasem aired on radio from July 4, 1970 until August 6, 1988. This recording is a rebroadcast from internet radio.

In this countdown, a listener from Australia asks, "How many acts born in Australia have hit number one and whio did it first?" Casey says that list has four acts on it, Men At Work (with 2 #1's), Rick Springfield and Air Supply (each hit the top spot once), and the lady who sang "Angie Baby" (ONJ and the Brothers Gibb were born in England so there's no need to get "Physical" over this perceived "Tragedy").

Kenney Loggins said his song "Welcome To Heartlight" (at #33) was inspired by a special education school called "Heartlight." Some of the lines in the song are what the kids had to say when asked what they liked about their school. After Casey gives the details, the song finally makes sense!

"Let’s Dance" by David Bowie debuts in the Top 40 at #29, up from #43. It is his first Top 40 hit in seven years. Nevertheless, "Overkill" by Men At Work debuts on the Hot 100 all the way up at #28, higher than any song since John Lennon's "Imagine" 12 years earlier. Australia is setting the standard.

Casey tells how Bob Seger's latest album was inspired by a famous comedian's self-depreciating humor, a comedian who won the 1977 Oscar for Best Picture. Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band are at numbers 22 and 17 with "Even Now," and "Shame On The Moon."

Casey gives an AT40 Special Report on the status of the Dance and Disco Chart, and tells about the pop Smash from the LP that has broken and all-time record for most weeks in the #1 spot. It used to be 9 but the new record is 11 thanks to this week's continuing #1 on the Pop Chart, "Billie Jean” by Michael Jackson.
