American Top 40 1984 March 17th (Size: 276.58 MB)
Description"Every week we count down the biggest hits in the USA, from Mercury, Nevada, to Mars, Pennsylvania; from Venus, Nebraska, to Earth, Texas. Climbing six notches to #23, here's Manfred Mann's Earth Band and 'Runner'." American Top 40 with Casey Kasem aired on radio from July 4, 1970 until August 6, 1988. This recording is a rebroadcast from internet radio. In this countdown a listener wants to know if any record has ever hit #1 on all three singles charts: Pop, Soul, and Country. Casey says 4 hits have done that in the Rock Era, and 3 of them were by the same artist, and all in the span of a year. Casey tells how the group UB40 chose its name was related to the fact that all eight of its members were unemployed. UB40 debuts at #37 with "Red, Red Wine," a Neil Diamond remake from 1968. Weird Al Yankovic also debuts his first Top 40 hit, "Eat It" at #36. Casey tells how Howard Jones got his recording contract because of a fake fan magazine published by a fan club that didn't exist. Mr. Jones is at #29 with "New Song" (and The Thompson Twins are at #19 with "Hold Me Now" which has the lyric, "I'll sing you a new song"). Casey says one song in the countdown is by one of the most electrifying performers of the Rock Era: the woman who taught Mick Jagger to dance. A listener asks, "For the Rock Era, what has been the biggest hit song by a married duo?" Casey says the songs in 1st and 2nd place belong to the same couple, Antoinette and Daryl. A listener wants to know how many songs in a foreign language have hit #1 in the US. Casey reports that in the 44 years of Rock history, only three songs sung entirely in a foreign language have done that. Casey plays samples of each.
