"We're counting down the most popular songs across the USA from Coolville, Ohio, to Cool Valley, Missouri; from Cool Ridge, West Virginia, to Cool Spring, Pennsylvania. At number 12 this week, here is Kool & The Gang with 'Joanna'."

American Top 40 with Casey Kasem aired on radio from July 4, 1970 until August 6, 1988. This recording is a rebroadcast from internet radio.

In this countdown:

Hitting the chart since 1964, Manfred Mann's Earth Band is on the chart with "Runner" at number 32; formed in 1968, Yes has a hit in the countdown, "Owner Of A Lonely Heart' at number 22; and the 61st hit credited to John Lennon, "Nobody Told Me" is at number 5.

A listener wants to know what recording acts have had the most top 40 hits in a single year. Casey says the top group is The Beatles, but the top solo act is a former barber from Pennsylvania who set the record back in 1949.

One record in this countdown has one side on the pop chart and one side on the country chart.

Casey reflects on the achievements of Wolfman Jack, the only working disc jockey in history to perform on three top 40 hits with three different acts.

On his way to number one, Kenny Loggins moves his soundtrack hit "Footloose" up 6 notches to number 16.

Casey tells about some of the many songs about the moon to have made the chart over the years, and the only one out of twelve that ever hit number 1 in the rock era, written by Lorenz Hart and Richard Rogers in 1934.
