"We're countin’ down the most popular songs in America. I'm Charlie Van Dyke doing the countdown for Casey this week."

Originally broadcast on June 1st, 1985, this program is brought to you by RocketMan's College of Musical Knowledge in conjunction with the CoPilot of the Airwaves (and his faithful dog Shukatoom). This is American Top 40 with Casey Kasem.

In this countdown (which has many magnificent network commercials) Charlie tells how Tina Turner made her comeback, not by recording a hit album, but by recording a hit single, just like they did in the old days. Tina is at #37 with "Show Some Respect."

Cissy Houston's favorite daughter Whitney has the highest debut of the week, "You Give Good Love" (at #34).

Charlie tells the story of "The Kids Of New York" and how they sang "We Are The World" as a fundraiser. He plays a sample of the kids’ version right before playing the popular version by USA For Africa (at #24).

A listener wants to know if any artist ever hit the Top 40 as a solo act, AND as part of a duo, AND as part of a trio, AND as part of a quartet, AND as part of a quintet! Believe it or not, Charlie says it has happened twice; once by a fellow named Paul and once by a fellow named Graham.

Charlie informs us that the latest song by Phil Collins ("Sussidio" at #17) was recorded in his bedroom. In fact, the whole album was, while he was on his honeymoon!

Madonna opens For Madonna! She is at #14 with "Angel" and #13 with "Crazy For You."

Mr. Van Dyke reports which country has had more #1 recording acts in proportion to their population than any other. It is the homeland of the Chief Engineer of the Starship Enterprise as well as the group Simple Minds, at #4 with "Don’t You (Forget About Me)."

We're told Axel F (at #3 by Harold Faltermeyer) is only the 4th instrumental to hit the Top 40 in the 80's. Chuck lists the other three. I looked at the sheet music to this one back at the time of this countdown. Guess what key it is in? F!

Charlie says The Bee Gees were the first act in chart history to get three #1 singles from one album until last week when Wham (still at #1 this week) saw their third single from the album "Make It Big." "Everything She Wants" is in the top spot.
