Trama :

New York, 1955. Il giovane Harry Angel viene incaricato di indagare sulla scomparsa misteriosa di tale Johnny Favorite, un ex cantante rimasto sfigurato durante una sua tournée al fronte, nella seconda guerra mondiale. Il suo cliente, Louis Cyphre, proveniente da New Orleans, sembra essere un uomo con uno strano fascino diabolico, capace di influenzare negativamente il suo stato d'animo. Angel si reca alla clinica dove Favorite era stato ricoverato dopo la guerra; qui scopre che Johnny Favorite era stato dimesso il 31 dicembre del 1943, un anno dopo essere stato arruolato. Angel si reca a casa del medico che curava Johnny, tale Edward Fowler, un tossicodipendente e scopre che Fowler era stato pagato 25.000 dollari per tenere la bocca chiusa e far finta che Johnny non fosse mai uscito da quella clinica. Dopo aver preso un caffè, Angel torna a casa di Fowler, dove lo trova morto con un colpo di pistola alla testa. Il giorno dopo Angel va da Cyphre, per comunicargli l'intenzione di abbandonare il caso, ma...
