Gramophone magazine called Angela Hewitt "the Bach pianist of our time" -- high praise that happens to be completely deserved. Here is a player who can dance and sing through complex counterpoint, and who radiates joy in even the most solemn music. On this disc, Hewitt turns from Bach's original keyboard works to arrangements. The most famous of these is probably Myra Hess's transcription of "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring," played here with utter simplicity. Most of the other arrangements are less well known, but they are all worth hearing. Hewitt's interpretation of "Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme" arr. Wilhelm Kempff has a spring in its step, indicating that these sleepers woke up in a very good mood, indeed. An arrangement of "O Mensch, bewein dein Sünde gross" by the English composer Herbert Howells is especially moving, its slow tread sustained with a beautiful, singing tone. Hewitt plays three of her own transcriptions from the Orgelbüchlein, including the disc's final selection, "Alle Menschen müssen sterben." It is a quiet meditation that leaves the listener in a spirit of exalted tranquility and serves as the perfect foil for the mighty Passacaglia in C Minor arr. Eugen d'Albert that precedes it. This may be the most impressive entry yet in Hewitt's superb Bach cycle for Hyperion.
