The books written earlier have a fantasy slant to them (low levels of technology, firebreathing telepathic dragons, and a feudal society), however McCaffrey prefers to describe them as science fiction and stresses the scientific rationales behind the world she has created. In later written volumes the series moves towards more overt science fiction as the colonists rediscover their links to the past and develop much higher levels of technology. rnrnPern is a planet inhabited by humans and dragons. It is, at first glance, a pre-industrial society with lords, holds, harpers (musicians, entertainers, and teachers), and dragons, with the occasional examples of higher technology (like flamethrowers, telegraph, chemical fertilizers, and powerful microscopes and telescopes). rnrnPernese people are separated into four basic groups: Weyrfolk (including Dragonriders) who live in the Weyrs, the Holders who live in the Holds (cities, towns and farms), the crafters who live in Crafthalls (or are assigned to work their crafts in certain Holds), and the Holdless who have no permanent home (including traders, displaced Holders, and brigands). rnrnThread is a mycorrhizoid spore that periodically rains down on the planet due to the orbit of the Red Star. The Red Star is a rogue planet in the Rukbat system. The Red Star, a Sedna-class inner Oort cloud object, has a 250 Turn (Pernese year) elliptic orbit around its sun. Thread can reach the planet Pern for about 50 Turns while the Red Star is at perihelion. Thread consumes organic material at a voracious rate, including crops, animals, and any humans in its path. rnrnThe Pernese use intelligent firebreathing dragons and their riders to fight Thread. The riders have a telepathic bond with their dragons, formed by Impression at the dragon\'s hatching. Later books deal with the initial colonization of Pern and the creation of the dragons through genetic manipulation. The lengthy (over two millennia) time period covered by the series as a whole gives room for new stories and characters, as the more recent novels have done. rnrnChronicles of Pern: First Fall rnFirst collection of short stories completely about Pern. First published in 1993. Three of the short stories were previously published elsewhere, while two were first published in this collection. A second anthology, A Gift of Dragons, was published in 2002. The first story covers the discovery of Pern and the commissioning of the colony. The remaining four stories are set after the events of Dragonsdawn, covering the desperate move north following the first fall of Thread, the founding of Ruatha by Red Hanrahan and the establishment of Benden Weyr. The fifth story explains how the colony was removed from the history books, isolating the planet from the rest of humanity.rnrnThe Dolphins of PernrnFirst published in 1994. This novel follows Dragonsdawn and the short story The Dolphin\'s Bell (short story contained in The Chronicles of Pern: First Fall) by discussing the present state (Ninth Pass) of the dolphins that were brought to Pern by the colonists. Set after the events of All the Weyrs of Pern it further integrates the science fiction aspects of the origins of the Pern series with the fantastical aspects presented by the original books.rnrnDragonseye (a.k.a. Red Star Rising) rnFirst published in 1997. After the events of All the Weyrs of Pern and The Dolphins of Pern, Thread is less of a threat to the planet. Returning to an earlier time in Pernese history, the author brings the earlier conflict of Thread reappearing in the Second Pass. The situation is similar to that of Dragonflight in that those who are alive do not know of the threat, and once again dragons and dragonriders must convince the populace why the dragons were created - to flame Thread from the sky.rnrnThe Masterharper of PernrnFirst published in 1998. This book details the birth and early life of Robinton who becomes the MasterHarper of Pern at a period just before Lessa becomes Weyrwoman. Robinton was rejected by his father Petiron and spent most of his childhood away from his father. However he composed many successful songs and was elected Masterharper unanimously. He tried to warn the Lord Holders of the rapacity of Lord Fax but was unsuccessful in doing so till it was too late. He was present when Lessa used her telepathic skills to provoke the duel in which Lord Fax was killed by Dragon Riders.rnrnEnjoy em!!!rnCL8
