Description

RELEASE NOTES

2070. Our world has changed. The sea’s rising level has harmed the coastal cities and climate change has made large stretches
of land inhospitable.
A futuristic entry in the award-winning strategy series, Anno 2070 offers a new world full of challenges, where you will need to master
resources, diplomacy and trade in the most comprehensive economic management system seen yet in the Anno series.
Build your society of the future, colonize islands and create sprawling megacities with multitudes of buildings, vehicles and resources
to manage. Engineer new production chains such as Robot Factories, Oil Refineries and Diamond Mines and trade with a variety of goods
and commodities.

Features

You know what the thing about Porsches is? There are all sorts of iterative improvements on the same basic design. If you look at a Porsche from the 1960s, you can still see that today's Carrera Turbo, for example, bears a lot of the same hallmarks. The good thing about this, if you like Porsches, is that you know that iteration after iteration has allowed the manufacturers to smooth out and perfect the design of their car without changing it drastically. If you like Cadillacs, though, Porsches just aren't for you, regardless of how refined the design of the latest one is.

Okay, so that's a long-winded way of getting to this: the Anno series is like Porsche – every title bears the basic hallmarks in the gameplay, layout, and look of its predecessors, only with more refinement and increasingly modern bells and whistles.

If you're unfamiliar with the Anno series, it's a long-running, (usually) historical, "supply-chain" RTS, in which you colonize islands and build up their infrastructures in order to produce a variety of goods for a variety of purposes. Essentially, the goal is to take raw materials and convert them into higher order goods, and then convert those into even higher order goods, so as to attract more highly skilled citizenry who can, in turn, assist in producing even higher-order goods.

You can't think of the Anno games, especially Anno 2070 (the first to be set in the future, rather than the past), like you do most other RTS titles. There's no way to "win," barring the mission objectives set for you in a campaign or various other goals the game throws at you from time to time. And, bless it, Anno 2070 gives you a host of goals: tons of campaign missions with lots of choice as to how to complete them, a variety of game modes to beat when you're done with the campaign, and even in-game achievements for reaching certain production milestones and other meta-gaming tasks. It's all well and good, but it doesn't change the fact that Anno 2070, like its predecessors, is best played in sandbox mode by those who enjoy "ant farm" type games.

That's not to say the campaign and whatnot aren't interesting, but when Anno 2070 gives you specific goals to accomplish, especially early on when you're just being introduced to the way the game works, you don't really have anything else to do except those things. So, most of the time you're only concentrating on building toward a few specific endgames, which means you build your stuff and wait for it to churn out the resources you need to complete a given mission. And the main issue is just that – you have to wait. Anno 2070 would greatly benefit from the ability to temporarily speed up time. Sure, there are plenty of moments in the game when you're doing a million things at once and time dilation would be a huge hindrance, but there are also times when you don't want to have to get up and make a sandwich while you wait for the troops to build what they gotta build.

Conversely, you get to go crazy in your own world in Anno 2070's sandbox mode, and that is where the game really comes into its own. For fans of the supply-chain RTS sub-genre, it's as good as it gets. Once you've planned your little island (you can build both above and below sea level), gotten your economy going, set up diplomatic relations with your neighbors (most of whom are voiced by bottom-of-the-barrel acting talent), and generally impressed yourself with your own Pericles-like city-running abilities, you'll find hours have gone by.

The revamped GUI leads you brilliantly and "ergonomically" to the build chains you want to produce the goods you desire, without needing to constantly recourse to rollover tips or a game encyclopedia (although both are also available), and this just makes the whole experience pleasant and logical. Plus, even in sandbox mode, the game throws a variety of goals and tasks at you (mostly optional) to keep you engaged, so it's not like you're just playing Minecraft with boats -- although the Minecraft crowd will find a lot to like here, and so will anybody else who likes non-combat RTS's. And Porsches.
