Description

Apoptygma Berzerk is an Alternative Rock/Electro band from Fredrikstad, Norway, founded by Stephan L. Groth in 1990. Still active, touring and working on some new material.
They began as an Industrial/EBM project having a few collaborations with several local musicians and some problems with the commercial realization as well; the first Apop's album came out only after three years. The CD called "Soli Deo Gloria" immediately became a hot stuff, put the project on the brand new level making them the one of the main Industrial Scandinaves, and the song called "Bitch" became the one of the ultimate band's hits.
After this, Stephan meets some new people and new breaths in electronic music, he decides to leave rough, aggressive EBM in the past and works on the new direction. After several experiments (side-projects TB-Moonchild/Total Transformation, H₂O, Acid Queen) Apoptygma releases a new album called "7", also remarkable for all-times-hits "Mourn" and "Non-Stop Violence". Then, in case of Stephan's conscription, a little interruption followed, so the decisive breakthrough to Europe in face of "Mourn EP" delayed. In 1998 Apoptygma starts selling in North America and set out to the first world tour finished by unconditional success.
Getting closer to 2000, they once again change their sound and in cooperation with VNV Nation even create a new electronic genre: Future Pop. In this, Apoptygma releases two albums: cold grey "Welcome to Earth" (one of their best and memorable creations) and positive relaxing "Harmonizer".
Along with the commercial progress and succeeding tours Apop do the fatal step, a bolt from the blue for every fan... They end up with the electronic scene, turning to the gaining Alternative Rock movement. Changing synth constructions and club DJs on the distortion-guitars (appositely figured on every live show before) and acoustic drums, Apoptygma Berzerk are away now from Front 242, VNV Nation and Covenant, much closer to Fall Out Boy, 30 Seconds to Mars and My Chemical Romance. The following album "You and Me Against the World" becomes the "most" in many ways: the most contradictory, the most unexpected and the most commercially successful in the band's history.
After years, Apoptygma Berzerk work further in this key, they attain more progressive and electronic-filled sound. Their last album "Rocket Science" is more varied, conceptual and peculiar than its predecessor.
Changing the sciene, changing the style with no regret, Stephan have not lost his own style and point of view, and his passion of music, too.
