Synopsis:
Subir Banerjee was the child actor who played Apu in Satyajit Ray's masterpiece, Pther Panchali. Despite being acknowledged as one of the greatest performances by a child actor in the history of world cinema, Subir Banerjee was never seen in a film again. Then one day, The International Preis für Fim-und-Meidenmusik of Germany decide to felicitate him. Arka (Gaurav Chakraborty), a young researcher of the Satyajit Ray Film & Television Institute goes searching for him, only to find an embittered old man (Ardhendu Banerjee). Little by little Arka gains the confidence of Subir, and he starts reminiscing about his life. To the surprise of Arka, Subir banerjee's life has many parallels with that of Ray's Apu..

Comments:
To millions of cinema lovers, the image of Apu remains that of a little boy growing up among hardship in a village in Bengal - the face of Apu is that of Subir Bannerjee. Yet banerjee is an unknown name, like many other child actors, he too has passed into oblivion. As the young researcher Arka gains the confidence of Subir Banerjee, the latter starts reminiscing about his life and his travails and we see a younger Subir (Parambrata Chattopadhyay) going through incidents that are eerily similar to those Ray's Apu went through. The story unfolds through a series of flashbacks and jump-cuts with Director Kaushik Ganguly using the now familiar black and white for the flashbacks and color for the present.

Its an unusual theme, told with an immense amount of sensitivity and a sense of wonderment. This must be Kaushik Ganguly's best film to date. His efforts are complemented by some superb acting by both Parambrata and Parno Ganguly (as Asima, the wife of Subir). The rest of the cast are just as good. I have always felt that Shirsha Ray is the best of the camera persons in Bangla Cinema and he does not disappoint. Equally effective is the editing by Bodhaditya, for this is a film made out of flashbacks and jump cuts. It needed some deft stitching to keep the narrative going.

Overa;ll a film worth seeing perhaps twice. Once to get the hang of the story and the second to appreciate the subtelty and nuances.

Uploader's Notes:
This 1080p rip is from a Web HD given to me by a friend. I have made very few changes to the original (including keeping the 24fps frame rate and the slightly peculiar frame size of 1904x960). The only substantial change is to reduce the ugly yellow tint that permeated the film just a little bit and a slight sharpening of the edges blurred by noise in the original.
