DescriptionRichard Arnell had his greatest successes as a composer in the 1950s, when he drew the attention and praise of the well-known conductor, Thomas Beecham. After that point he began experimenting with mechanical and electronic sound, and drew far enough from both the traditional mainstream and the aleatory young turks to alienate nearly all backers. His FifthSymphony, like the Fourth, follows his sojourn in the US in the 1940s. It also shows the influence Prokofiev's brilliant orchestration and Copland's energy were having on a technique formed from Hindemith. The 1950s would prove the highpoint of his musical career as far as conductors and audiences were concerned, though Arnell never ceased writing up into his nineties. A bio of Arnell is included.
