Auschwitz (Auschwitz-Birkenau Konzentrationslager) was the largest concentration camp and Nazi extermination. Located in Oswiecim (Auschwitz in German) at 60 kilometers west of Krakow (Poland). It was created in May 1940 and conducted by the SS. Liberated by the Soviet army on 27 January 1945.

In those 5 years, at least 1.3 million men, women and children, 90% Jews, were murdered in Auschwitz: 900 000 immediately, "the weak, sick or unfit for work", the output trains that had brought them, especially in gas chambers or shot.
