Zwei Zeitsoldaten, die sich seit ihrer Kindheit kennen, haben als Auslandseinsatz den Wiederaufbau am Hindukusch zur Aufgabe. Doch der humanitär gedachte Einsatz stößt im gefährlichen Alltag schnell an seine Grenzen.

Daniel (Max Riemelt) und Ronnie (Hanno Koffler) sind Freunde seit Kindertagen. Jetzt gehen sie gemeinsam mit dem gebürtigen Afghanen Emal (Omar El-Saeidi) als Zeitsoldaten an den Hindukusch. Ihr Auftrag: den Wiederaufbau im Norden Afghanistans zu unterstützen, durch humanitäre Hilfe Stabilität schaffen, dazu beitragen, dass sich demokratische Strukturen etablieren können. Doch die Wirklichkeit sieht anders aus. Was es bedeutet, in eine Region zu gehen, in der Krieg herrscht, das wird den jungen Soldatinnen und Soldaten erst nach und nach bewusst. Schnell müssen sie sich in der ihnen völlig fremden Welt zurechtfinden und die richtigen Entscheidungen treffen. Die Aufbauhilfe vor Ort droht am Einfluss der Taliban zu scheitern. Immer mehr stellt sich die Frage nach dem Sinn ihres Einsatzes. In der Extremsituation des Krieges steht die Freundschaft von Daniel und Ronnie vor einer Zerreißprobe …

Barren landscapes. Searing heat. The stench of diesel, sweat and fear -- this is Afghanistan. And for the three pals Daniel, Ronnie and Emal, it's home for the coming months. They're soldiers stationed with the ISAF, international mission. Idealists? To varying degrees. But committed to helping the populace how ever they can. Restricting their mission from the start are the troops' two most important rules: No one takes his own decisions. And no one gets involved in local Afghan affairs. They agree to rebuild a school in a remote town if girls are allowed to attend as well. Providing valuable help is the German aid worker and teacher Anna, whose best friend Tara, the daughter of the local leader Jamil, lost two fingers to the Taliban for having applied nail polish. Their work is made increasingly difficult by Taliban raids, inflexible, archaic customs, and the vague boundaries between helping and harming.... The situation comes to a head when one of Jamil's sons is killed by Americans, and Tara is to be wed to the local Taliban leader. Anna begs the ISAF soldiers to intervene. But that means breaking their two most important rules...
