Wie droomt er niet van om door de tijd te kunnen reizen? In 1985 is het eindelijk mogelijk dankzij een geniale vinding van Dr. Emmett L Brown (Christopher Lloyd). Deze excentrieke uitvinder heeft een DeLorean DMC-12 sportwagen omgebouwd tot een heuse tijdmachine waarmee gereisd kan worden naar elk gewenst jaartal. Hij nodigt zijn vriend en pupil Marty McFly (Michael J. Fox) op een nacht uit om een testrit te gaan maken. Helaas loopt niet alles helemaal volgens plan en Marty komt vast te zitten in 1955, de tijd dat zijn ouders jong waren. Tot overmaat van ramp begeeft de tijdmachine het waardoor Marty niet terugkan en hij de hulp moet in roepen van de dan veel jongere Dr Brown. Bovendien komt Mary zijn ouders tegen en wordt zijn moeder verliefd op hem in plaats van op zijn vader waardoor Marty’s eigen bestaan in het gevaar komt. Marty moet nu in een race tegen de klok de schade zien te herstellen voor het voor hem te laat is en tegelijkertijd een manier proberen te vinden om terug te keren… terug naar de toekomst!

It is the year 1985. Marty McFly, a mild-mannered high school student, stopped by Dr. Emmett L. Brown's laboratory to play around with an amplifier. Then he receives a message from Doc that he needs help from him for Doc's latest invention, a time machine made out of a DeLorean sports car that can travel through time instantaneously when it reaches a speed velocity of 88 MPH. Then, Doc was gunned down by Libyan Nationalists, Marty makes an effort to escape from the Lybians by using the time machine. Then Marty accidentally warps himself into 1955. Where he meets both of his parents when they were teenagers, then Marty unintentionally interrupts his parent's first meeting together, he then finds a younger version of Doc and together they try to find a way to get Marty's parents-to-be back together, and to get Marty back to 1985.
