Description

TITLE:
Ballengers Manual Of Otorhinolaryngology-Head Neck Surgery

Description
Ballenger's Manual of Otorhinolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery, presents synopses of 47 chapters of the book that address clinical problems, diagnosis, and management. These clinically oriented synopses provide information on the commonly encountered problems in otology/neurotology, rhinology, facial plastic and reconstructive surgery, pediatric otorhinolaryngology, laryngology, head and neck surgery, and bronchoesophagology. The content reflects the central responsibility of the otorhinolaryngologist in treating patients with diseases affecting the senses of smell, taste, and balance and in the disorders of human communication affecting hearing, voice, speech, and language.

Reviewer: Kenneth W. Altman, MD, PhD (Northwestern University)
Description: This pocket manual of otolaryngology-head and neck surgery is an abbreviated version of the more extensive textbook. It serves as a quick reference to many otolaryngologic disorders and basic treatment paradigms.
Purpose: The purpose is to present common and uncommon clinically relevant subjects in otolaryngology in a concise form. These are worthy objectives, and the book appears to have a niche, particularly for the medical student, resident physician, and practicing physician (to a lesser extent). The book meets the author's objectives.
Audience: The book is written well, but because of the concise summaries it appears to be best targeted to the medical student and resident physician (in my judgment). The author is a credible authority on the subject.
Features: The book covers the scope of the field of otolaryngology-head and neck surgery, including ear, rhinology, facial plastics, laryngology, and head and neck/cancer. Again, its abbreviated pocket reference format has the advantage of being a quick reference, but this also tends to limit the depth of the coverage. There are no figures. A pocket reference such as this may be better to include some quick reference tables, figures, flow diagrams and charts.
Assessment: Despite these shortcomings, other pocket references rely too heavily on figures, so this book is an excellent addition to the literature.
