Banchieri & Striggio - Madrigal Comedies - Concerto Italiano (1995) [Philidor; FLAC] (Size: 258.28 MB)
DescriptionMadrigal comedies were once thought to be the 16th century predecessors to 17th century opera, but that theory's been recently scotched. It's now realized that these comedies weren't meant to be staged, except in the theater of the mind, and before a small, patrician audience. They typically featured the comic adventures of commedia dell 'arte figures that have remained popular to the present time--Arlecchino, Pantalone, etc: the sly servant, the old, lecherous buffoon, the loving couple, the sententious doctor, and the rest. Few madrigal comedies have survived, but Striggio, and especially Banchieri and Vecchi, were noted for theirs. Transfers are made at 768 kBits/s, directly from the disc.
