Description
Barbara Buchholz – Moonstruck
Label: Intuition Records – INT 3402 2 Country: Germany Released: 06 Jun 2008 The Berlin-based musician Barbara Buchholz is one of the world's leading performers on the theremin, the instrument that was developed by the Russian physicist Leon Theremin in the 1920s. The forerunner of all electronic instruments it is deceptively simple - just a box with two antennae. It is unique in the way that it's played without being touched. A weak electrical field surrounds the antennae and as the player enters this field a sound appears. Tones rise and fall depending on the distance of the hands from the metal antennae and its sound can be reminiscent of a violin, a musical saw or even a human voice. On 'Moonstruck', the theremin is not the principal instrument but rather it fulfils a variety of very different functions. Sometimes it is employed as a solo instrument; elsewhere it adds a few timbres; and sometimes it provides the basis on which the other instruments build. The musicians featured on this album play a multitude of instruments and they include the innovative trumpeter Arve Henriksen, Susanna and the Magical Orchestra, clarinettist Tilman Dehnard and guitarist Thomas Weber. 1.
