Italy , XII century . Il sogno di Federico I Barbarossa ( Rutger Hauer ) è quello di creare un impero universale, mediante il controllo politico sui Comuni italiani del Nord e sul Regno di Sicilia . The dream of Frederick I Barbarossa ( Rutger Hauer ) is to create a world empire, through political control over the Northern Italian communes and the Kingdom of Sicily . Più volte l'imperatore scende in Italia per ripristinare la supremazia nei confronti delle mire autonomiste dei Comuni. Several times the emperor comes to Italy to restore the supremacy towards the aims of municipalities. In un'occasione l'imperatore tedesco viene fortunosamente salvato da un giovane ragazzo milanese figlio di fabbri, Alberto. On one occasion the German Emperor is luckily saved by a young boy smiths son of Milan, Alberto. Ma il Barbarossa passa alle vie di fatto, mandando l'esercito imperiale a compiere spedizioni punitive contro molte città alleate di Milano, e infine assedia Milano e il 10 marzo del 1162 la invade con le sue truppe, radendola al suolo. But Barbarossa goes to assault, sending the imperial army to take punitive actions against many allied cities of Milan, and finally besieging Milan and 10 March of 1162 with the invading troops, razed to the ground. Nello scontro muoiono i due fratelli di Alberto, uno dei quali, Otto, è ucciso da Alberto medesimo in un tragico tentativo di difendere le mura di Milano. Die in battle the two brothers Albert, of which one, eight and killed Alberto same in a tragic attempt to defend the walls of Milan.
