In de zomer van 1943 verschansen meer dan 2 miljoen Russische en Duitse soldaten zich rondom de Russische stad Kursk.
Het zou 1 van de meest cruciale slagen worden uit de geschiedenis van de 2e Wereldoorlog. De voorgenomen Duitse strategie, bekend onder de codenaam "Operatie Citadel", is om zowel vanuit het zuiden als het noorden aan te vallen. De Russen hebben echter harde lessen geleerd uit eerdere confrontaties en hebben het gebied volledig versterkt en voorzien van duizenden mijnen.
De slag om Kursk zou de grootste tankslag uit de 2e Wereldoorlog blijken.De Duitsers zijn niet in staat de enorme kracht van de Russen te weerstaan en zijn uiteindelijk gedwongen zich terug te trekken tot achter de rivier Dnjepr.
Dit tot ongenoegen van Adolf Hitler die terugtrekking expliciet verboden heeft. Uiteindelijk zou de Slag om Kursk het begin zijn van de opmars van het Rode Leger en de ondergang van de Nazi's.
