Members climbed where they wanted with whatever equipment they could lay their hands on, and drank as if the hangover hadn't been invented. They were working-class trade unionists in a sport then the preserve of the middle class. This was the inspiration for The Glasgow Climbing Club, written by David Napthine, creator of the Recall Man series. Three men - a shop steward, a political activist and their unemployed friend - set out on a climb, hoping to leave shipyard politics behind. If only life were that simple ...
