Living Britain (BBC)
Nature Documentary hosted by Samuel West, published by BBC in 2000 - English narration Information ------------------------------ Living Britain: the Wildlife Year BBC series examining how the changing seasons impact on the wildlife flora and landscapes of Britain. Looking at different locations across the country over the course of a year these documentaries show how nature is affected by and adapts to the altering climate. Month by month, Living Britain chronicles the wildlife year, tracking the way the lives of native plants and animals change with the cycle of the seasons and react to the contemporary British way of life - both urban and rural. From the wild highlands of Scotland in the grip of deepest winter to the modern heart of London in high summer, this series presents a wildlife diary of a typical year up and down the country. Interspersed with this unfolding portrait of living Britain are informative special features. Focusing on subjects of topical interest such as the return of the otter, the precarious future of the badger, and the demise of many songbirds, these features show how native plants, birds and animals respond to Britain's ever-changing landscape. 1) Deepest Winter Series portrays British wildlife over an entire year. In the Scottish highlands the majestic golden eagle surveys his icy kingdom, whilst further south vast flocks of wading birds find refuge on Britain's extensive marshes and estuaries. 2) Spring Episode 2 follows the arrival of Spring as it moves north - swallow, newt, eel, polecat, red kite, and wild flowers.Capercailie and black grouse perform their curious courtship rituals, whilst in the New Forest badgers have their cubs. 3) Early Summer A time of blossom and mayflies. Kingfishers teach their fledglings how to fish. By Midsummer Day the hectic breeding season is almost over. 4) High Summer We move on to Midsummer is a busy time for insects, grouse & merlins rear their young. Chalk downland and urban wastelands bloom -- and as the sea warms, basking sharks and whales visit Britain's coastline. 5) Autumn A season of glorious colour, dramatic wildlife activity, and violent storms. Wild geese arrive. Deer bellow rutting challenges. Salmon leap waterfalls and fungi erupt from the ground. A time of harvest festivals and Halloween. 6) Winter Reflections Throughout Britain bonfires burn and fireworks illuminate the autumn sky as Guy Fawkes Night heralds the onset of winter. As we approach the end of another year its time to reflect on the past and future of Living Britain.
