Charismatic Argentinian pianist Martha Argerich makes a welcome Proms return in a 20th-century work that should eloquently display her mercurial temperament and technical agility - Ravel's captivatingly jazzy G major concerto, an inspired homage to Hollywood and Harlem. Argerich's former husband Charles Dutoit conducts the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and the concert begins with the UK premiere of Canadian-born composer Claude Vivier's visionary exploration of the cosmos, Orion. Dutoit conducted its 1980 premiere three years before Vivier's tragic death (he was murdered in his Paris apartment). The concert ends with a return to Ravel and his brilliantly evocative orchestration of Musorgsky's musical memorial to a dead painter friend, Pictures at an Exhibition.

The programme begins with an exotic work composed in 1979 by the Frenchman Claude Vivier. Huge orchestral forces conjure up the immensity of the cosmos, and the piece suggests that human nature is just as vast and unfathomable.



The brilliant, mercurial pianist Martha Argerich returns to the Proms, playing Ravel's jazz-inspired concerto.
