The Last Nazis

History Documentary hosted by David Morrissey and published by BBC in 2009 - English narration

The last Nazis

They are accused of some of the worst war crimes of the 20th century. Now a final bid has been launched to bring them to justice before they die

At first glance, the mug shots appear to be a gallery of roguish grandfathers, but the octo- and nonagenarians are the 10 most-wanted fugitives of one of the most heinous regimes the world has ever seen. They are the last remaining Nazis, and the codename of the hunt to find them - Operation Last Chance - says it all

More than 60 years after the Nuremberg trials put the first of Hitler's henchmen in the dock; the Simon Wiesenthal Centre yesterday released its most wanted list of the remaining Nazi war criminals. The battle to bring them to justice is complicated by a mix of political apathy, legal wrangling, legendary powers of evasion and what Nazi-hunters term "misplaced sympathy" for the craggy-faced men in their twilight years.

"They are old, and the natural tendency is to be sympathetic toward people when they reach a certain age, but the passage of time in no way diminishes the guilt of the perpetrators," said Efraim Zuroff, the Jerusalem-based director of the Wiesenthal Centre. "If we were to put a chronological limit on prosecution, we would basically be saying you can get away with genocide."

The generation of Nazis who fought during World War 2 is almost gone, their lives, their actions, and their crimes soon to be consigned to history forever.

This sense of urgency, and of time running out, underpins The Last Nazis - a landmark documentary series about surviving war criminals living in the 21st century.

It's the last chance to tell these stories, to speak to these men; to enter their worlds; and uncover the impact their existence has had on others. Through intimate and unique access, this trilogy of documentary films tells three compelling stories.

1) The Hunt for Dr Death

In the autumn of 1941, a young Austrian doctor called Aribert Heim was assigned to the Mauthausen Concentration Camp. In just six weeks, he murdered hundreds of inmates by carrying out horrific and needless experiments.

His 'procedures' included injecting poison directly into the hearts of his patients, often timing them to see how long it took them to die. He would amputate limbs without reason, and without anaesthetic, and would even keep mementos of his victims, using skin as a lamp shade, and a skull as a paperweight.

He evaded capture and has never answered for his crimes - but now 60 years on and with Heim well into his 90s, fresh evidence has emerged suggesting that he might still be alive.

This film follows Dr Efraim Zuroff in his international manhunt for one of the world's most wanted Nazi war criminals.

With Heim's horrific crimes soon to be consigned to history forever, this Nazi hunt will be the last of its kind and the clock is ticking for Zuroff to bring his target to justice.

2) Most Wanted

Most Wanted documents the journey of two young filmmakers who gain access, for the very first time, to some of the most wanted Nazi war criminals still alive in an attempt to discover how their wartime actions have shaped their lives forever.

3) Children of the Master Race

In Nazi Germany in the 1930's, a secret plan was hatched to create a so called Aryan Master Race of blond haired, blue eyed children. While millions of genetic undesirables were eliminated this elite was being bred to populate the new German reich. This project was called Lebensborn - the brainchild of SS chief Heinrich Himmler. He said: Should we succeed in establishing this Nordic race and from this seed bed produce a race of 200 million then the world will belong to us. The SS would be the sexual engine behind this world takeover bid. An eager Himmler ordered his men to mate, both in and out of wedlock, and claimed jubilantly "my men tell me with shining eyes that they have just had an illegitimate child." But he was frustrated by the time it took. To swell the numbers in the Lebensborn, the Nazis went on to kidnap 200000 Polish children for "Germanisation". 65 years after World War 2 ended this film reveals what became of some of those who were born and stolen to become the new master race. Guntram Weber reveals how he discovered he was the secret godson of Himmler. Folker Heinecketells how he was raised a German but discovered he was stolen from Poland. And Gisela Heidenreich tells how she grew up with a mother who helped Lebensborn create the Master Race.
