Synopsis

Philippe Claudel and Kristin Scott-Thomas reunite in this subtle story of a man in the autumn of his life, torn between a loving wife and his dangerous attraction for a troubled, mysterious young woman. Paul has never questioned his choices. Married right out of med school to the stunning Lucie, who set aside her own career to accommodate his brilliant one as a brain surgeon, he has been faithful, has earned the respect of his peers, raised a son and built a lovely home. Life is good. But now, in the autumn of his life, something might threaten all that. It starts after a chance meeting with young and mysterious Lou who keeps turning up in his life. When roses are delivered daily at his office and home, Paul presumes Lou is stalking him, yet he can’t resist the lure of an ambiguous and dangerous relationship with her. Fascinated by her emotional frailty, her mystery and grace, Paul fails to see that he might be the target of a sinister plot, something dark and twisted that could threaten everything he’s built and everyone he loves.

Before The Winter Chill: Slow-moving yet powerful study of forbidden obsession

A DARK spectacle of obsession begins once the masks begin to slip and the faults within a seemingly-stable marriage threaten to wreck a happy home

You need to be patient with Before The Winter Chill. It is a gloomy, slow-burning film that adds insight and intrigue the way an artist brings texture and colour to a painting.



Paul (Daniel Auteuil) is a respected, successful surgeon married to the devoted Lucie (Kristin Scott-Thomas). They live in a beautiful house, want for nothing and seem perfectly happy but beneath the calm surface of their marriage lurks all kinds of niggling resentment and unspoken discontent.



Daniel Auteuil has the meatier role and is good at conveying the grumpiness of advancing age. He retains our sympathy as he meets a younger woman Lou (Leila Bekhti) who claims that he once operated on her.



Initially, she seems like a stalker and the film could be straying towards Fatal Attraction territory but then it is Paul who becomes obsessed by her as he recklessly risks his perfect life.



Before The Winter Chill often feels more of a melancholy character study than a thriller. When it delivers on that intrigue with a completely unexpected denouement, you realise it has been cleverly structured and perfectly executed.
