Between The Lines S3 Complete

"Between The Lines" is set in the Complaints Investigation Bureau (CIB) - the department responsible for investigating other police officers - of London's Metropolitan Police. The first two series had stories based around various different aspects of the darker side of the police, ranging from such topics as petty corruption, racism and sexual harassment through to grand conspiracy, with some plot threads running through the series over several episodes. The series also dealt with the personal lives of it's less-than-clean-cut characters, particularly the womanising lead character Tony Clark, and is also notable for its inclusion of a lesbian character in a major role. In the third and final series, the focus changed significantly, moving away from the police force to other areas of security and espionage.

Publicity : Neil Pearson's pushy cop, Tony Clark, is a cop no longer. Unfinished business from the previous series sees him ejected from the Met with nowhere to go. Whereupon up pops Deakin (Tony Doyle), his old boss and adversary, with a job to help a tabloid newspaper to substantiate its story about an MP's private life. The question is whether Clark's enforced career moves from flushing out bent coppers to freelance trouble-shooter will provide the same compelling drama. The early signs are favourable, particularly as those excellent foils, Harry (Tom Georgeson) and Mo (Siobhan Redmond) emerge, but it can only be a matter of time. (The Times, October 19, 1994).

Publicity : Neil Pearson's Tony Clark may have left the police but in his new role of freelance troubleshooter in Between The Lines (BBC-1, 9:35pm) he is never short of work, even if it is usually dirty and morally compromising. A computer engineer in the defence industry is found dead in his garage and the coroner says suicide. Clark is called in to investigate. Predictably, he suspects something more sinister. Murder by M15 seems a reasonable hunch. Between The Lines is still compulsive, but is a series that prides itself on not getting stuck in the same groove starting to become a little formulaic?
