Description
Between Two Rivers - Dennis Potter (1960)
======================================== Returning after three years at Oxford to the Berry Hill roots of his childhood, Dennis Potter wrote and narrated this documentary about his beloved Forest of Dean. He describes the changes he finds in the life of the village, in the working-class traditions and in his relationships with family and friends and uses interviews with locals to show these changes. During filming, Potter recorded many village thoughts and voices, revealing desires about social status, views on comradeship, playing in the local band and the fortunes of the local club. It is also an insight into Potter's relationship with the Forest itself and some of the themes that would later resonate in his work. His 1965 play, "Stand Up, Nigel Barton", attempted to transmute "Between Two Rivers" from documentary form into artful fiction.
