Archaeologist Julian Richards explores the Viking heritage of the British Isles and Ireland, not only using

archeological evidence and historical records, but a landmark genetic survey commissioned by the BBC specifically for

this series. Were the Vikings raiders, colonists...or both? Where was their impact strongest? Was there a mass movement

traders who set up camps in the Orkneys and the Shetland Islands off the northeastern coast of Scotland. From there they

went not to mainland Scotland, but down the "Sea Road" to the Hebrides and Ireland. For the first time,

genetic evidence is used to corroborate archaeological finds of Viking settlement.
